Sony set to bring 3D into the home

Published: Thu, 03 Sep 2009 11:18:12

Sony has confirmed its intention to begin rolling three-dimensional (3D) TVs into homes around the world beginning next year. The Japanese electronics powerhouse told those in attendance at the IFA conference in Berlin this week that it will be backing the technology. Sir Howard Stringer, chief executive of Sony said at the event that 3D is "clearly on its way to becoming a mass market technology".

"A variety of issues still need to be addressed, but the 3D train is on the track and Sony is ready to drive it home," he added. Although 3D is nothing new in the world of television and cinema, it is only in recent years that the technology has received a major push from film makers. James Cameron's hotly anticipated 3D epic Avatar was revealed to the world last month, while Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg are among the Hollywood big-hitters to have heralded the third dimension as the future.

Sony, which manufactures TVs and PlayStation 3 consoles as well as operating one of Hollywood's largest production studios, is ideally placed to encourage the technology in the same way as it did with its Blu-Ray format. Are you looking forward to the 3D home cinema "revolution"?
