3D gaming coming to PlayStation 3 3D gaming planned for PlayStation 3

Sony has revealed that it is planning to introduce 3D technology to PlayStation 3 games at some point in the future. The Japanese electronics firm told investors at a presentation that it is planning to enable 3D functionality on its high-definition console via a future firmware update. This means that gamers with compatible TVs and glasses would be able to enjoy 3D games without needing to buy a new version of the console.

Sony launches PS3 and PSP video download service Downloadable movies come to PlayStation 3 and PSP

Sony has launched a new video download service on its European PlayStation network, allowing PlayStation 3 and PSP owners to watch hundreds of movies on their games consoles. More than 800 films have been made available for the debut of the service, including brand new releases like Star Trek and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which can be purchased or rented in high-definition. Gamers will then have the choice of enjoying them at home on the PS3 or transferring them to their handheld PSP to watch on the move.

Xbox 360 gets Facebook and Twitter functions Facebook and Twitter compatibility arrives for Xbox 360

Microsoft has released an update for its Xbox 360 console which allows users to access social networking sites Facebook and Twitter. Using the new version of the Xbox Live online service, paid subscribers can now share messages, photos and status updates via their games console, with both services having been tailored specifically for the Microsoft machine. The console maker has also bolstered the Xbox 360's multimedia capabilities with the update, adding Last.fm online radio functionality, as well as the UK debut of the Zune video service.

BBC to begin Freeview HD rollout in December Freeview HD rollout to begin next month

The BBC has revealed that it will start introducing its new Freeview HD services next month with the aim of providing full UK coverage by 2012. Although Freeview HD receivers are not set to be available until early next year, coverage for the service will begin in Manchester and London on December 2nd 2009. This will mark the beginning of a rollout which will enable around half of UK TV viewers to watch high-definition broadcasts of the World Cup in South Africa next summer.

iPlayer Channel coming to Wii Improved BBC iPlayer coming to Wii

Nintendo Wii owners will be able to download a specially-optimised version of the BBC iPlayer for their console this week. The on-demand media service, which allows users to freely access recent BBC TV and radio content, will be given its own dedicated Wii Channel as of this Wednesday. Wii owners could previously only access the iPlayer via the console's Opera-powered internet browser, while the new service will offer BBC shows directly from the menu screen.

Modern Warfare 2 breaks sales record at launch Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 enjoys record-breaking launch

Blockbuster videogame Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has recorded the biggest launch in entertainment history, according to its publisher. Estimates from Activision state that the game has sold around 4.7 million copies since its November 10th release, earning more than $310 million (£185.8 million) in the process. This far exceeds the early sales of previous videogame record-holder Grand Theft Auto IV and even bests the $158.4 million debut of Batman movie The Dark Knight.

Live Sky TV broadcasts coming to iPhone Sky TV comes to iPhone

iPhone users can now watch Sky TV content on their handsets thanks to the release of a new app for the device. The newly-launched Sky Mobile TV App lets iPhone and iPod touch owners stream live broadcasts onto their handsets via the gadget's built-in Wi-Fi connection. Among the channels supported by the app are Sky Sports, ESPN and Sky News, meaning that owners of the Apple gadgets can now watch live Premier League matches on the move or keep constantly updated on world news.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 given West End premiere Modern Warfare 2 given star-studded London launch

The hotly-anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the first videogame to receive its own West End premiere, with numerous celebrity guests in attendance. Publisher Activision marked the release of Infinity Ward's new shooter with a high-profile event at the Vue cinema in Leicester Square, hosted by TV presenter Vernon Kay. Among those present at the launch were Dom Joly and Danny Dyer, while a number of British actors who perform voiceovers for the game, such as Craig Fairbrass and Kevin McKidd, were also in attendance.

Wii Fit Plus rises to top of gaming charts Wii Fit Plus becomes UK's top-selling game

Nintendo's high-profile fitness videogame Wii Fit Plus has become the best-selling game in the UK in its second week of release. The sequel to the smash hit Wii Fit sold three per cent more copies than it did in its debut week, rising to the top of the all formats sales chart at the expense of PC management simulation Football Manager 2010. Nintendo will be hoping that gamers will take to the Department of Health-endorsed title as much as they did with its predecessor, which has sold more than 22 million copies worldwide.
