Generic domain name expansion 'will increase competition'

Competition for generic domain names is set to be rekindled with the forthcoming expansion of the number of generic domain name variants, according to an expert. Traditional website suffixes such as .com and .net are soon to be joined on the market by a host of additional generic domains, such as .food, .music or .hospital.
Larger firms are also to be given the chance to register company-specific domain names of their own, such as .amex or .pepsico.
According to Richard Sammon of advice site Kiplinger's Personal Finance, the introduction of the domains will result in fierce competition among businesses as they compete for top names such as .airline or .realtor.
He told the Washington Post: "It's expected that many companies in a given industry will want to be part of the custom domain to show customers and clients that they are legitimate industry players." According to recent research from VeriSign, the total number of top level domain names increased by 184 million in the second quarter of 2009.
