Some of the biggest mobile phone manufacturers in the world have signed up to an agreement to produce a standardised mobile phone charger. The announcement comes as great news for anyone who has ever lost a charger and had to replace it with an expensive company specific model. Companies that have already put their name to the European Commission proposals include Sony Ericsson, Apple, Nokia, Samsung and RIM (which makes the BlackBerry).

Persistent rumours that Sony may design a serious iPhone rival have been given weight by a prominent Japanese newspaper. Well respected Japanese publication Nikkei has reported that Sony is putting together a dedicated team to begin work next month on the new project, in an effort to stave off competition from the iPhone. The device, which is said to be based on PSP (PlayStation Portable) technology, could be a fusion between a games console and a mobile smartphone.

Trying to find the time to read a story to the kids can be similarly difficult, so a new invention from Japanese and Chinese researchers could prove to be very popular. Ninomiya-kun is a 25-kilogram robot that can read aloud from books thanks to its 'camera eyes', which it uses to scan material placed in a special stand.

Apple has also unveiled the new iPhone 3GS, which it claims is its fastest model ever and with its expanded memory and backup from the popular app store, it will likely be a strong contender for best selling handset of the year.

Samsung heralded the arrival of its new iPhone challenger, the Jet S8000, at a number of launch locations across the world last night (June 15th). The new smartphone was unveiled in London, Dubai and Singapore with boasts from the company that it offers two technological "world firsts". According to Samusung, the super-sharp 800 times 600 pixel 3.1-inch screen and 800 Mhz processor offer users the sharpest, most colourful image display and fastest full-touch handset on the market.

Sony launches W995 in UK

Sony has unleashed its new flagship W995 smartphone in the UK. The handset is part of the Walkman range of mobiles and features PlayNow Arena, which enables the device to play Sony movies, clips and music. Sony has equipped the W995 with a high-end list of specifications, including an eight megapixel camera with face recognition technology.

Face recognition should mean that users won't blur their friends' heads out when taking snaps.

The Motion-plus adapter for the Nintendo Wii remote is being shipped out to customers. After recent announcements by Sony and Microsoft that they plan to launch their own motion sensor control devices, Nintendo has once again usurped its competitors by upgrading the already unbelievably successful Nintendo Wii wand. Motion Plus is a small accessory that fits onto the Wii remote and Nintendo claims it is quicker and more accurate when detecting player movements.
