British solider dies from Afghan wounds

A British soldier has died in hospital from injuries sustained in an explosion in Afghanistan last month. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the soldier from the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland, died at the Royal College of Defence Medicine Selly Oak, on Sunday. The soldier was injured when an improvised explosive device detonated during an operation in Kandahar province on September 15th 2009.

A statement from the MoD said despite the efforts of medical staff both in Afghanistan and back in the UK, over a period of nearly six weeks, the soldier died as a result of his wounds during the weekend. Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Cartwright, commanding officer of the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland, said: "Despite a most determined and courageous fight against his injuries sustained in Afghanistan, he died last night in Selly Oak hospital. "On behalf of everyone in the Battalion, I offer my deepest sympathy and prayers to his family and loved ones who have been with him these past few difficult days."

The soldier's next of kin have been informed. His death brings the number of UK troops killed since operations began in Afghanistan in 2001 to 223.
