Massive earthquake strikes New Zealand

New Zealand has been rocked by one of the most powerful earthquakes in its recorded history. The 7.8-magnitude quake struck off the coast of the country's South Island at 21:22 local time (10:22 BST).

According to the US geological survey (USGS), the earthquake took place 161km west of Invercargill (866km south-west of Wellington) with a depth of 33km. Tsunami warnings are not expected to be issued , inthenews.co.uk understands.

According to the New Zealand Herald, people ran from restaurants in Queenstown as buildings shook during the quake.
