G8 leaders to tackle global poverty

The leaders of the G8 nations are due to unveil a series of measures aimed at alleviating global hunger and boosting food supplies on the final day of their summit in Italy. The three-day talks have so far focused on climate change and the financial crisis, but will now turn to discussing the plight of the world's poor. US president Barack Obama is expected to announce a $15 billion initiative aimed at boosting global food supplies, with efforts to help poorer nations develop their own agriculture.

On Thursday, the leaders agreed global temperatures should not rise 2C more than 1900 levels. There was some criticism of the announcement though and the agreement to cut greenhouse gases by 80 per cent by 2050. Environmental groups have raised concern over the lack of any real short-term goals and initiatives.

Today, there is also expected to be a large-scale anti-globalisation march planned in the city of L'Aquila, where the summit is taking place. The protestors will also highlight the apparent lack of progress in reconstructing homes and buildings destroyed in the city since a devastating earthquake struck in April.
