Child rescued from Yemen plane crash site
A toddler has been rescued by boats searching for survivors near the wreckage of the Yemeni plane crash. The Yemeni jet airliner crashed into the Indian Ocean with 153 people on board, according to reports. GDP suffers worst quarterly fall since 1958
UK GDP suffered its worst quarterly fall since 1958, falling 2.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2009. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) revised down its previous estimates today, saying economic output had contracted 4.9 per cent compared to a year ago. Swine flu may have been leaked from laboratory
The Swine flu H1N1 influenza "A" may have been leaked from a laboratory, according to reports. The Telegraph reports the flu may not have circulated if it hadn't been for a possible leak, suggested to be somewhere in Asia or the Soviet Union around 1977. Train explosion in northern Italy kills 'at least 13'
A freight train carrying liquefied natural gas has crashed in northern Italy killing at least 13 people, according to reports. Another 50 people were reportedly injured in the blast, which happened in the Tuscan city of Viareggio. The explosion happened just before midnight, when one of the carriages came off the tracks ploughing into several homes. House prices rise 0.9% in June
House prices in June rose by 0.9 per cent, according to data out today from the Nationwide building society. The three month rate of change was positive for the first time since December 2007, but Nationwide said a "sustained recovery still faces risks". Man arrested over 'military murder'
Police investigating a suspected murder in the military town of Larkhill have confirmed that both the victim and a suspect were members of the armed forces. A statement from Wiltshire police claims a 21-year-old man died at around 23:10 BST on Monday night in the Packway area of the Wiltshire town. Inquest opens into girl's death from swine flu
An inquest has been opened into the death of a nine-year-old girl who died in hospital last week after contracting swine flu. Sameerah Ahmad died at Birmingham Children's Hospital on Friday, it was announced yesterday. SFO freezes $100m of Stanford assets
The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has announced it has obtained a restraining order on over $100 million (£60 million) of assets linked to Texan billionaire Sir Allen Stanford. The cricket tycoon recently handed himself into US authorities over a series of charges related to alleged fraud worth $8 billion (£6 billion). Government to publish education strategy
Schools secretary Ed Balls will unveil the government's last education white paper before the next general election later. The paper is widely expected to include legally enforceable rights to schemes such as one-to-one tuition and sports provision. Three arrested over girl's death in suspected arson attack
Three teenage boys have been arrested in connection with a suspected arson attack which left a 15-year-old girl dead. Maleha Masud died in hospital on June 25th from injuries sustained during a house fire at her home in Tooting, south London, four days earlier.
