Volkswagen to launch powerful new Golf
Published: Mon, 02 Nov 2009 12:42:29
Volkswagen has unveiled the fastest accelerating Golf it has ever produced. The new Golf R with DSG gearbox, which has been developed by Volkswagen's special projects division, is capable of reaching 62 mph from a standing start in just 5.5 seconds.
Equipped with a special hydraulic version of the German carmaker's 4MOTION four-wheel drive system, the car is designed for maximum traction in order to help it pull away quicker. The latest edition of Volkswagen's 26 million-selling Golf also comes with a range of styling touches designed to set it apart from other hot-hatches, including 18-inch alloy wheels, a roof-mounted spoiler and LED lighting units at both the front and rear. When the Golf R reaches showrooms early in 2010, it will be accompanied by a similarly powerful new version of the Scirocco.
The Scirocco R with 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder engine and DSG gearbox has a 0-62 mph time of 5.8 seconds.
Will the Golf R impress petrolheads?

I'm really excited, revvy and grippy! VW have done both in recent years but not in one package. Sad to see the R32 V6 engine go but money is tight, even in Germany. The Passat R36 is the next hot rung on the VW ladder, maybe a tuner will blend the two models?
