Social networking is a term that not everyone is familiar with, you may even be involved in social networking and just not know it! The term refers to an internet phenomenon that is being seen all around the world and refers to the linking of people through a specific site, product, or other people. The two most popular websites where this phenomenon is seen is on Facebook.com and Myspace.com
On these websites people are able to reconnect with old friends, make new friends, and get to know the friends of other people that they already know. This is a very social scene as people are allowed to post pictures, personal information, email, chat, and leave comments for one another on just about any topic. It's believed that around 50% of Americans between the ages of 12 and 17 are using these social networking websites and the UK is not too far behind those numbers.
Social networks are used to encourage both social and commercial activity and are a great advertising platform for a variety of advertisers who use these sites to communicate their brand awareness and advertising messages to their target market.
Social networking websites are used to make friends in a lot of instances but they are also used to make business contacts, as well. Many businesses are creating their own pages on these social websites in an effort to let others in their area know about their products and even link up with other businesses that they may be able to work with. These social websites have definitely opened up a whole new chapter in ones ability to make friends as well as help promote and grow many businesses.
The popularity of social websites will likely continue to grow with new generations of people continuing to use these websites. While the largest demographic to take advantage of social networking is the 12-17 age range the phenomenon is in no way limited to people of this age as families, established businesses, and even senior citizens continue to make these websites and others like them a very integral part of their social and business lives.
