Sony Ericsson to launch its first Android mobile

Sony Ericssons Xperia X10 will be available from early next year

Sony Ericsson has unveiled its first Google Android-based handset, as it continues to find ways to take on Apple's iPhone. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, which will be launched early in 2010, has a customised version of the Android operating system. It uses the upgraded operating system to run a number of entertainment and communication features which are designed to appeal to the consumer market.

The Mediascape application allows users to access and manage content from sources such as YouTube and PlayNow, while the Timescape feature manages communications by indexing everything by person regardless of whether the messages came via SMS, email, Facebook or Twitter. Sony Ericsson claims the Xperia X10, which also has a touchscreen interface and 8.1-megapixel camera, will change the way consumers interact with their mobile phones.

The electronics company's chief creation officer Rikko Sakaguchi said: "With the X10, we are raising the bar we have set ourselves with entertainment-rich phones like Aino and Satio by making communication more fun and playful, multiplying and enriching opportunities to connect." Sony Ericsson's handset will face strong competition when it arrives in the shops, as a number of other new smartphones, including the Palm Pre, Motorola Dext and Spotify-ready HTC Hero, will be launched before then. Will the Xperia X10 offer anything different from other smartphones?
