British internet users 'trust .uk addresses'

British consumers prefer .uk websites

The majority of British internet users prefer to click on .uk sites than .com ones, according to a new report.

A survey by internet registry Nominet asked consumers whether they would be more likely to click on a .uk or a .com web address first in search results.

Among those quizzed, 77 per cent said they would choose the .uk result first, up from just over 70 per cent when the same survey was carried out in 2008.

Researchers also found that British consumers have more trust in .uk ecommerce sites, with 74 per cent of people saying they prefer to use online shops with such web addresses.

In its Domain Name Industry report, Nominet suggested the findings showed that Britons view .uk sites "as a trusted environment, presenting relevant and local information".

It added: "For businesses, it highlights that a .uk web address is an important asset when doing business in the UK with UK consumers and businesses."

Nominet's report also concluded that the growth in the number of .uk domain names registered would slow from 13 per cent in 2008 to eight per cent this year, a trend it attributed to the recession.

The organisation's director of communications Phil Kingsland said the full impact of the recession on the industry is still unclear, as it could take more than a year for the domain names owned by failed businesses to become available again.
