A850 A850 unveiled by Sony

Sony has unveiled its new A850 digital SLR, which boasts a 24.6 megapixel sensor and nearly all the features of the A900. Set to appeal to semi-professional photo enthusiasts, the camera's Exmor CMOS sensor promises to capture "flawless, detail-packed images" with impressive colours and textures. The A850 also includes a fast, high-accuracy autofocus system, which makes it easier for photographers to achieve optimum focus with moving subjects.

Apple Apple's Snow Leopard let out of its cage

Apple will be looking to wrestle away some of the buzz surrounding Windows 7 with the launch of its Snow Leopard into the wild today (August 28th). The latest version of its OS X operating system carries on the big cat naming convention and claims to be a "refined" version of Leopard, Apple's most recent system. In this sense, the new moniker might be quite apt - just as a leopard can't change its spots, so OS X version 10.6 won't sport any major differences from its predecessor on its worldwide launch.

Backpacker Gappers can use gadgets to enhance their year abroad

Gadgets could become an increasingly important part of a gap year abroad. This is according to the Guardian's Nicola Iseard, who reckons that gadgets can help a gapper get the most out their foreign adventure. Among the more practical ones she recommends is a hidden wallet which clips on to a belt and hangs inside the top of trousers - an investment that could help to prevent pick-pockets.

BBC iPlayer BBC promises Freeview HD push for World Cup

Football fans may be interested to hear that they could be watching next summer's world cup in glorious high-definition (HD) without having to pay a penny. That is if plans made by the BBC and several other leading broadcasters to push their Freeview HD service into 50 per cent of homes by the end of next year come into fruition. According to tech website Digital Spy, the broadcaster and its allies know that 2010 will be a big year for the digital TV industry.

Gadgets are becoming the preferred choice of gift among couples looking to get more for their money. This is according to new research which revealed Brits are more likely to buy an iPod or DVDs for their partner rather than an expensive item of jewellery, the Scotsman reports. While jewellery was the favoured type of gift 20 years ago, 60 per cent of boyfriends and girlfriends would now rather buy a useful present for their other half.

Nokia Nokia 5230 will come in a number of colours

The new Nokia 5230 touchscreen phone, which is being targeted at the social networking generation, will come in a range of custom colours. This is according to the Nokia Conversations website, which has a picture of the phone in pink, yellow and turquoise. Nokia vice president Jo Harlow said that the 5230 would be "competitively priced at 149 Euros".

LG GD910 LG GD910 wrist phone to go on sale this month

The LG GD910 watch phone, which has been described by Orange as the "must have gadget of the year", will go on sale in the UK on August 27th. While this is good news for gadget lovers, the downside is that it will only be available for a limited time from a single store at the Orange shop in Bond Street station, central London, T3 reports. It is as yet unclear as to how customers will react to the GD910's price, with Orange dropping from the original £1,000 to £500. The watch phone has already gone on sale in France for £770.

iPhone More people turn to touchscreen smartphones

Increasing numbers of people are being tempted by smartphones as more impressive gadgets are released on to the market. Research by Gartner has revealed that smartphone sales around the world totalled 36.4 million during the first quarter of this year, which is a 12.7 per cent increase from the same period last year. This is in part down to the popularity of the Apple iPhone 3GS, which has proved a tempting upgrade to existing iPhone 3G customers.

A burglar who stole several gadgets from a woman's home in Hove, East Sussex has taunted the victim on Facebook. Victoria Richardson, 42, returned to her home to find her laptop, Nintendo DS, iPhone and purse missing and was shocked still further when she logged onto Facebook to find the robber had left mocking messages on her personal account. The gloating messages included one which read: "On my new laptop."
