Tech heads are waking up to the shock news today that the all conquering iPhone may have a vulnerability. Hackers could potentially be able to use all the functionalities of the smartphone remotely, including making phone calls, sending messages and even downloading personal data. Researchers at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday (July 29th) revealed that they were able to "take complete control" of the device by sending a special text message.

In the report, issued by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), workers are advised on the use of Twitter to air their opinions and communicate via the popular website. The move by the government follows successful use of the service by Downing Street and the Royal family.

The average speed of broadband connections in Britain is falling significantly short of the 'up to' speed that is being advertised. In new research released today by Ofcom, the average UK broadband connection was revealed to be 4.1 megabits per second, far lower than the 7.1 megabits average which is advertised. The regulator noted that many modern internet uses, such as online gaming, require a fast connection and a number of consumers believe speed to be a priority when it comes to web access.

Nominations for the hotly contested T3 gadget awards have been revealed. The tech magazine has unveiled the final five gadgets in all of the 18 categories including the much lauded Gadget of the Year. Apple is prominent in the lists with 11 gadgets in the running for awards, including the iPhone 3GS.

A website has posted pictures that it claims are the designs for Sony's new S- Series Walkman. The new slimline MP3 player could be an out-and-out rival to Apple's iPod Nano and looks set to give it a run for its money, at least in an aesthetic sense. Details are as yet non-existent, however, the last incarnation of the popular S-Series featured video playback, an FM tuner and a 40-hour battery life so it's safe to assume that the update will at least match these specs.

The Australian and US armies have launched a competition to design a generation of high-tech robots to help with combat missions. Aimed at artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic specialists, the contest features a prize of £984,000 to the winner, as well as large cash sums to runners up. The chosen device must be able to be used remotely by soldiers who are fighting in urban areas and will be employed in an attempt to limit the number of human casualties in dangerous situations.
