Explorers discover Ernest Shackleton's lost whisky horde

A team of Antarctic adventurers are celebrating after succeeding in their mission to recover buried treasure - namely, the lost whisky stash of explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. The New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust explorers have recovered five crates of whisky and brandy from beneath the polar hut once used by Sir Ernest, where it has been buried for more than 100 years. This mission was first announced in November 2009, with the expedition having previously believed that only two crates were present, meaning the extra alcohol is a welcome bonus.
According to the team's leader Al Fastier, the bottles were still intact and full of liquid when they were found, despite being encased in ice. Drinks company Whyte and Mackay described the find as "a gift from the heavens" and hopes to use the recovered alcohol to recreate the long-lost original recipe of Mackinlay's whisky. However, Mr Fastier promised prior to the expedition that he has no plans to drink the recovered whisky itself, saying he would rather leave it "a mystery".
