Team heads to Antarctica to drill for lost whisky

A team of Antarctic Heritage Trust workers are embarking on a mission in the frozen continent to recover a precious stash of lost whisky. The explorers have been commissioned by drinks company Whyte & Mackay to find a frozen hoard of 100-year-old McKinlay and Co. booze, which was abandoned at Cape Royds by the explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.
Crates were discovered in 2006 beneath a hut in Cape Royds used by Sir Ernest in 1909, but the whisky proved to be too deeply embedded in the ice to recover it. The new team will be bringing drills to retrieve the scotch, which Whyte & Mackay will be looking to sample ahead of a proposed relaunch of the vintage drink. However, Al Fastier, who will lead the expedition, said he will abstain from drinking the precious cargo himself.
He said: "It's better to imagine it than to taste it. That way it keeps its mystery."
This week, an ultra-exclusive whisky called Dalmore Oculus, which has been made using malts from 1868, is to be auctioned off in Edinburgh, where it is expected to command a price of up to £20,000. What's the most luxurious thing you've ever consumed?
