Brazilian bricklayer attends own funeral after night out
Published: Thu, 05 Nov 2009 09:35:04
A Brazilian man stunned his family when he turned up alive and well at his own funeral. Relatives of Ademir Jorge Goncalves identified him as the victim of a car crash in the state of Parana on Sunday, reports O Globo. As is customary in Brazil, the funeral was arranged for the following day. However, it was soon stopped when Mr Goncalves turned up at the ceremony.
The 59-year-old bricklayer had been out all night drinking with friends before hearing that he had apparently been killed. He rushed back home to set the record straight, but did not arrive until the funeral had begun. A police spokesman told the newspaper some members of Mr Goncalves's family expressed doubts about whether the disfigured body from the crash was actually him before the positive identification was made.
Once the man officers described as the "walking dead" turned up, police were able to correctly identify the crash victim and his funeral has now taken place. Earlier this year, a Romanian man also turned up at his own funeral - but Marin Voinicu's attendance was planned. The 73-year-old wanted to ensure his funeral was well planned and organised a test run, complete with wailing relatives and a service conducted by a priest.
