Monks have hairy solution to road problem

Hair has been donated to the monks cause

Fixing a road can be a long and arduous task, made all the more difficult if the necessary funding is unavailable. As such, when a group of monks in Burma took it upon themselves to raise the money needed to repair a road that leads to a monastery, they found it necessary to be rather inventive. The Buddhists from Mandalay decided to create a campaign that required people to donate their hair, Kumudra magazine reported.

According to the publication, a monk said that thousands of women and around 100 men have already handed over some of their locks. The hair will then be sold to wig or doll makers, or to tradespeople in China. The proceeds will be put towards the upkeep of the 15-mile road leading to the Alaungdaw Kathapha pagoda, including the construction of several bridges, to aid access to the pilgrimage site.

Would you sell your hair to help fund roadworks?
