A British diplomat killed in Jamaica was the victim of a homophobic attack, reports have suggested. John Terry was serving as the honorary consul to the British High Commission in when he was found murdered earlier this week. A Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed to inthenews.co.uk yesterday the 65-year-old had been found in Montego Bay and British officials were now working with Jamaican police.
Reports suggest Mr Terry was found attacked at his home on the Caribbean island, with a note left describing him as a "batty man". Foreign secretary David Miliband paid tribute to Mr Terry, who separated from his wife three years ago, on Thursday, claiming he was "deeply saddened" by the news. "John Terry was a key member of our team in Jamaica and had been an honorary consul for 13 years, but with many years of other service to the British community in Jamaica before then," he said.
"Honorary consuls like John play a valuable role in our work overseas and this was especially true of John who helped many, many British visitors to Jamaica over the years. "My thoughts are with his wife and children. He will be greatly missed too by colleagues and all those who knew him."
Mr Terry had last been seen driving home on Tuesday and the alarm was raised by a neighbour who reported seeing a light on at his home through the night. He was awarded an MBE in 1992.
