MPs accused of abusing their parliamentary expenses are unlikely to be charged because there is a minimal chance of successful prosecutions, police have said. The Metropolitan police have been looking into claims that surfaced when the Daily Telegraph began publishing receipts of MPs' expenses and allowances, which raised the prospect of fraud prosecutions against several of the worst offenders. But on Friday on a turbulent day in Westminster, Scotland Yard said the chances of individuals MPs being charged were very low.
"The panel's view is that, unless evidence is available which shows individuals deliberately misled the Fees Office, it is highly unlikely that there could be a successful prosecution," a statement issued on behalf of the Met and the crown prosecution said. "Many of those complained about appear to have provided accurate information and therefore the MPS will not pursue a criminal investigation into allegations against them." The Met added that it was up to the parliamentary authorities to decide whether they should consider cases under own internal processes.
Today's statement also revealed there were a "small number" of allegations where questions were yet to be answered. "We are therefore continuing to liaise with parliamentary authorities in the two Houses over the provision of this additional information so the assessment panel can make informed decisions on these remaining allegations," it added.
