Obama promises tough stance on North Korea

President Barack Obama has said the United States will not "continue a policy of rewarding provocation" in relation to North Korea. The American leader, speaking in Paris where he is attending a memorial service marking the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings, vowed to crack down on Pyonyang for its continuation of nuclear missile tests. Mr Obama claimed North Korea's actions were "constantly destabilising the region" and said he would "take a very hard look at how we move forward on these issues".

"I don't think that there should be an assumption that we will simply continue down a path in which North Korea is constantly destabilising the region and we just react in the same ways," he told reporters after meeting French president Nicolas Sarkozy in Caen. "We are not intending to continue a policy of rewarding provocation." The UN Security Council is currently discussing tightening sanctions against North Korea, after fears grew over the possibility of tests on a long-range missile system later this month.
