Grieving relatives wait to hear news of their loved ones aboard the plane

A toddler has been rescued by boats searching for survivors near the wreckage of the Yemeni plane crash. The Yemeni jet airliner crashed into the Indian Ocean with 153 people on board, according to reports. The Airbus 310 flight IY626 crashed near the Comoros archipelago, taking off from Yemeni capital Sanaa and due to arrive in Moroni at 23:30 BST.

The Yemeni civil aviation authority told the Associated Press there were at least three babies on board, and a large number of the passengers are believed to be French. The disaster is the second plane crash this month to involve large numbers of French citizens, following the Air France Airbus crash in the Atlantic Ocean on June 1st. It is not yet known what caused the crash last night, however, the BBC reports officials as saying there were bad weather conditions in the area.

A search is currently underway for any survivors, but the AFP news agency was told by officials, wreckage from the plane, an oil slick and bodies had been spotted in the water a few kilometres from Moroni, on the island of Njazidja.
