England fan shot in Kyrgyzstan

An England football fan has been shot in the leg following an incident in a bar in the build-up to Saturday's World Cup qualifying match in Kazakhstan, it has emerged. The fan, who has not been named, was taken to hospital and later discharged after the incident, which is believed to have taken place on Tuesday in Bishkek - the capital city of neighbouring Kyrgyzstan. Reports suggest the fan was part of a small group drinking in the bar that evening.

However, unrest began when the group, who were chanting football songs, were asked to stop but refused - prompting the owner to draw and use the weapon he had stored behind the bar. The Foreign Office has provided no specific details of the incident but confirmed that investigations are "ongoing". Saturday's match between England and Kazakhstan in World Cup qualifying group six is taking place in the city of Almaty, with several thousand England fans thought to have travelled to the region.

The corresponding fixture at Wembley last October resulted in a convincing 5-1 win for England.
