Suzuki Alto hits 141mpg in fuel economy challenge

The Suzuki Alto has recorded a fuel economy figure of 141mpg during a section of the Global Green Challenge in Australia. With the government using tax measures to persuade motorists to buy greener vehicles and the AA reporting that the average price of petrol in the UK is now 105.1p per litre, the issue of fuel economy has never been more important.
Carmakers are doing everything they can to promote their vehicles as efficient, including entering them in events like the Global Green Challenge - a 1,900-mile drive from Darwin to Adelaide designed to test fuel consumption. A Suzuki Alto with a 1.0-litre petrol engine recorded an average consumption figure of 72mpg for the whole event, but excelled in cities and registered 141mpg in urban driving conditions.
The recent UK MPG Marathon produced some similarly eye-catching figures, with the SMART Fortwo Coupe Cdi Passion registering an overall fuel economy figure of 96.81mpg and the Toyota Yaris TR Diesel recording 86.18mpg.
