A 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa has become the most expensive car ever to be sold at auction. Selling for 9,020,000 (£7,943,000), the car beat the previous world record by nearly 2,000,000. The automobile was sold at Maranello in Italy at the third annual Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event yesterday (May 18th).
Max Girardo, the managing director of RM Auctions, said that collectors from all corners of the globe were involved in the bid. "The quality and the provenance of the Testa Rossa speaks for itself and the price we achieved is a testament to that," Mr Girardo added. "[It is] one of the most alluring and iconic of all Ferrari cars."
Only 22 of the Testa Rossa were constructed between 1957 and 1958. The model went on to win ten victories at various international championship races. Among the races in which the auctioned car, chassis number 0714TR, competed was the 1,000km Buenos Aires race in January 1958.
