Brand in talks to play legendary swordsman Hawkwood

British actor and comedian Russell Brand is in talks to play a real-life action hero in a new film role. Brand, currently shooting the remake of 80s comedy Arthur, is in negotiations with 20th Century Fox for Hawkwood, an action-comedy about a legendary 15th century swordsman. According to Deadline.com, Brand would play "real-life swashbuckling figure John Hawkwood" in the film as well as producing alongside Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark.
Hawkwood, a morally questionable but talented swordsman, was paid to lead various European armies - including Italian and French battalions - during the Renaissance wars in the 1400s. Brand himself mooted the idea to Chernin Entertainment's comedy executive Nicky Weinstock, having worked with Weinstock on Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, and screenwriter Jared Stern was hired to pen a Hawkwood script. The project remains in development stage at present, with no director attached.
Brand, meanwhile, can soon be seen in Julie Taymor's adaptation of The Tempest and as a voice in animated comedy Hop.
