Polanski in lawsuit against French media

Roman Polanski has filed a lawsuit against four French publications for publishing photos of him and his family. The director, who remains under house over the revival of a 1977 case in which he pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, claimed that the photographs are an invasion of his privacy. He has asked for 10,000 (£8,950) in compensation from Le Journal du Dimanche for publishing an image of him standing at a window, his face mostly concealed by curtains.
The Guardian quotes the French newspaper's lawyer Christophe Bigot as saying: "Can you seriously claim in this context that if you stand at the window you won't get your picture taken?" He has also requested 55,000 (£49,000) from VSD magazine for printing pictures of his children with actress-singer Emmanuelle Seigner. Polanksi has demanded a total of 150,000 (£135,000) in compensation from four French publications.
His lawyer Marion Grégoire said that the lawsuits were "to put an urgent stop" to the interest in Polanski since his 1977 sex case was restarted. After pleading guilty to having had unlawful sex with a minor in 1977, Polanski left the US in 1978 just before he was due to be sentenced. Polanski lived in France for 30 years before he was arrested in Switzerland on a US warrant in September last year. He remained in a Swiss jail for two months before being moved to his holiday home where he is now imprisoned under house arrest while a US extradition request for him is considered.
