Ridley Scott confirmed to direct Alien prequel

A fifth instalment in the Alien series of films is to be directed by Ridley Scott, it has been announced. The Blade Runner director, who helmed the 1979 original, will return to the saga for a prequel produced by Twentieth Century Fox. Jon Spaihts has written the script for the film, whose events will take place before the event of Scott's groundbreaking 1979 Alien film.

According to Variety, the Alien prequel will see a commercial space vessel diverted from its planned return to Earth after receiving a distress signal from a nearby planet, only to discover that the alert had been generated by an empty ship as a warning. Advertisement director Carl Erick Rinsch had been originally lined up to direct Spaihts' script for Scott's Scott Free Productions but after Fox showed reluctance to allow a first-time feature filmmaker to take on the franchise, Ridley Scott has agreed to return to the sci-fiction/horror series. Spaihts came to the attention of Fox having written sci-fi epic Passengers for Keanu Reeves and is also involved with Disney's Children of Mars, St George and the Dragon for Sony and a rewrite of The Darkest Hour for Fox themselves.
