Divorce chance higher for live-in couples

Couples who live together before getting married are more likely to file for divorce. That is according to a new study published in the Journal of Family Psychology, which revealed that respondents who co-habited before tying the knot reported a lower satisfaction rate than those who waited until they were married to live together. The study, which was undertaken by researchers at the University of Denver, also found that moving in together may give people a reason to get married that perhaps would not be there if they lived apart.

Data for the article was collected via telephone surveys in the US which involved more than 1,000 individuals between the ages of 18 and 34 years old. Lead researcher on the study Galena Rhoades said: "We think that some couples who move in together without a clear commitment to marriage may wind up sliding into marriage partly because they are already cohabiting." However, the picture for British marriage appears to be brighter, with the divorce rate in 2007 at its lowest recorded level since 1981, according to the Office for National Statistics.
