West End Shows

London's West End is one of the great theatre venues in the world, rivalled only by Broadway in New York. Like its American counterpart, there's a huge variety of different types of West End shows to enjoy, from serious drama to musicals, comedies, and murder mysteries. In addition, there are also plenty of ways to find cheap and discounted theatre tickets, either online or via specialist ticket booths, and the range of eating and drinking options in Theatreland makes a West End show a great night out.
Whatever your favoured genre, there are plenty of West End shows to enjoy. A perennial favourite is the musical, and there are plenty on in London at the moment, such as the Sound of Music, Billy Elliot, Mary Poppins, and Grease. If your taste is for more serious drama, there is always plenty of Shakespeare on in London - Macbeth and Hamlet at the moment - as well as contemporary classics such as David Mamet's searing Glengarry Glen Ross, or the moving Shadowlands. With comedies and murder mysteries such as Agatha Christie's legendary "The Mousetrap" which is now in its record 55th year, there's something for everyone.
The first option for buying cheap theatre tickets is to try the theatre's box office, but unless you go on the afternoon of the performance, there are unlikely to be many cheap tickets on offer there. Much better to try is an online ticket selling website or the half-price ticket booth in Leicester Square. You'll often find that the best discounted theatre tickets are for matinee performances or last-minute cancellations, and if you're prepared to be flexible in what you see and when you watch it, you can find cheap theatre tickets for under ten pounds - fantastic value when you consider the range of stars that are currently performing in West End shows.
Seats in the stalls are generally the most expensive; cheap theatre tickets are usually located in the dress circle, though individual venues vary. Value is also to be found outside the theatre, with many restaurants in the West End offering discounted menus for pre-theatre meals - excellent prices for good food, conveniently located just minutes from your chosen show.
To find out what's on, there are a number of theatre based magazines and websites such as Timeout.com
Thestage.co.uk, where you can find a wealth of information on new and existing West End shows and Discounttheatre.com, Theatreticketsdirect.com
and Londontheatre.com
where you can buy tickets online.
