Insulating Your Home

If you're looking to insulate your home, there are a number of easy and inexpensive ways to do so. Good insulation has a number of benefits. First and foremost, it will help you keep your fuel bills down by requiring you to use less heating, so you can stay warmer without turning up the thermostat.
Having proper insulation within your home is also more environmentally friendly and helps save the planet. Under new regulations, all UK house sellers now need to get a Home Information Pack prepared which includes details of how close your home comes to various environmental standards. If you have taken the necessary steps to insulate your house properly it may help to sell your house - even in a difficult market.
There are a number of different ways to insulate your home. First, consider loft insulation. Up to a quarter of the heat loss from a house occurs through the loft, and it's relatively easy to implement: the insulation material is simply laid over the floor of the loft, between and then over the joists, and forms a snug blanket that traps heat as it rises from the rooms below. This can be done by yourself or a professional installer.
Another possibility is to draught proof your house, either through simple measures like draught excluders, by using sealants such as masking tape, or more permanent seals to stop the flow of air leeching heat from your home. Double-glazing is expensive, but the savings on heating bills will be immediately noticeable, so this is well worth considering.
Finally, you should think about cavity wall insulation. Up to half the total heat loss from a house occurs through uninsulated walls - for the average 3 bedroom house, the cost of cavity wall insulation will run around 500-600 pounds, but insulating your home correctly will save you a quarter on your heating bills, so you will definitely see savings over time.
UK insulation grants are currently available for loft and cavity wall insulation for some private rented and owner occupiers. If you receive certain benefits, you can qualify for free loft and cavity insulation. Some help is also available to those not receiving benefits.
