Christmas Pantomimes

Christmas pantomimes are very popular in many areas of the world and perhaps the most popular in the United Kingdom. Pantomimes are theatrical performances where comedy and fun are key. The art form is thought to have started in Italy, as it has some of the same characteristics as Commedia Dell'arte, which is a form of theatre that began in Italy in the middle ages. Pantomime was being practiced and enjoyed in the United Kingdom by the 16th century. Pantomimes are traditionally found today in Great Britain, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Ireland with Christmas Pantomimes being the most popular.
Pantomimes are great for families, as the productions are generally family friendly (although there are some exceptions). Some of the most popular shows include Aladdin, Babes in the Wood, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Dick Whittington, Jack and the Beanstalk, Mother Goose and Peter Pan.
Children especially enjoy the pantomime experience because of the audience involvement, booing the villain and cheering the hero and there are some risqué lines and innuendos that the adults can enjoy without the children picking up on them! The leading male character in a pantomime is traditionally played by a young woman, with the older usually played by men, This exchange of roles is where much of the comedy comes from.
The pantomime season typically ranges from early December to the end of February and tickets for UK shows usually start to be advertised from October onwards. If you are thinking of taking your family to see a pantomime this Christmas check local papers, theatres and the internet around this time for ticket information.
