2009 is the year of sport

This year has bought us some absolutely nail–biting tennis tournaments, rugby games, cricket matches and golf games; and thank god the year is not over yet! Let’s take a moment to go over some of the highlights of the twenty20 and the ATP world tour, as well as performances by sporting legends like the Saracens and Tiger Woods.

The British 2009–10 rugby union season has started with an absolute bang this year and one of the teams to really keep your eye on is the Saracens, who up until last week had been undefeated. However this came to an end in France when they were beaten by Toulon 31–23. However the Saracens should not be discouraged as they are still on the top of the Guinness Premiership Table and are still looking like real contenders for the Cup – and of course there is a long way to go in the season.

The Saracens have had a rather turbulent past and went up and down between the first and second tiers of English rugby in the 1990s. They then went on to finish fourth in the Premiership at the end of the 2006–07 season and could not top that by finishing only ninth in the 2008–09 season. So if they are going to take the Cup this season then they still have a lot to prove.

TigerWoods

Something else that is always worth keeping an eye on in the sporting world is golfing legend . He is currently ranked the worlds greatest player; a title that he has held for some time now, and is also credited with encouraging the huge amount of increased popularity that golf has received in the past few years. Tiger Woods won three consecutive US amateur titles, the first at only 18 and has gone on to win every major tournament title. Tiger Woods is also the only golfer of the modern age to have held all four major Tournament titles at once. After injury in 2008 his 2009 season has been turbulent and he unexpectedly lost to YE Yang in the 2009 PGA Championship, so Tiger Woods is certainly one golfer to keep watching.

In other sports news the ATP world tour has had people all across the UK absolutely gripped by all the action that has been going on there. The likes of Nadal and Ljubicic, Djokovic and Lopez have been battling out this year and the standard of tennis has been absolutely phenomenal. The ATP World Tour has been running since 1990 in an attempt to give extra attention to a number of high profile players who did not believe they and the sport of tennis was being promoted well enough. This has evolved into the competition that it is today where some of the biggest names in tennis battle it out at the end of the tennis season. Designed to attract the biggest players, the ATP World Tour is a sub–Grand Slam tournament that has so far this year been incredibly exciting to watch.

Twenty20

Something else that had us gripped over summer was the Twenty20 matches that were being played both in England with the ICC World Twenty20 and domestic tournaments in countries such as India. Twenty20 cricket started off officially in 2003 in the UK as a way to breath new life into the game of cricket and reach a newer and perhaps younger audience to the game. Since then Twenty20’s popularity has risen in leaps and bounds as it is known for big hitters, pop music and lots of action. In 2009 the winners of the ICC World Twenty20 Cup was Pakistan who managed to beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets. So next round the Brits will really have something to prove.
